The American West: preparing our trip

After scouring all kinds of travel sites and guides, we decided to go to the United States for our honeymoon.
After more than a year of preparations, we wanted to take advantage of our 3 weeks to discover the wonderful landscapes of the American West.

The first (and not least) thing we do is to check the overall accessibility of the trip. Fortunately, the United States became aware of the importance of accessibility in the daily life of its citizens quite early on: public buildings, tourist sites and transport are for the most part accessible and equipped.

The design of the journey

If we take a map of the United States, the West of the country offers an infinite palette of places, each more incredible than the other, from the Arizona desert to the snowy peaks of Wyoming. We had to make a choice!
We then cut the pear in two by aiming for theSalt Lake City - Las Vegas - San Francisco axis.

We dreamed of discovering the famous "Great American Western Parks" that everyone talks about. It was a good thing, because our previous trips had taught us one thing: nature must dominate the route! So we will only stop in three cities during our trip:

  • Salt Lake, our starting point
  • Las Vegas, an unmissable stopover
  • San Francisco, last stop on our journey

The other stages of this road trip are in the heart of nature so that we can recharge our batteries.

You don't have to be afraid of long car journeys in these areas!

This route is no less than 3,500 km long, not counting any detours!

How to get around?

There is only one direct flight to Salt Lake from Paris with Delta. As a member of SkyTeam, you will benefit from the specialised customer service for people with reduced mobility: Saphir. If you wish, assistance will be provided on arrival at the airport until you board the plane.

Remember to book your car well in advance. Almost all major car rental companies offer a car with steering wheel controls. Beware, however, of the type of equipment offered. When we picked up the car, a "push-pull" system had been installed without any protection for the pedals. As we regularly have spasms, we preferred to avoid an untimely kick on one of the two pedals: Myriam drove the whole way.
Also check that the model is at the right height for you!

Where to stay?

There is no shortage of hotels in the United States, ranging in size from motel to luxury hotel.
They all have at least one ADA (Accessible Disabled Act) room. This act regulates the accommodation and accessibility of hotels. It gives you a good level of confidence in what you will find. Booking these rooms is very simple: it is done directly on the website! We must admit that it's a real pleasure not to have to call or email a dozen hotels before finding the right one!
